We take pride in being one of the first Trauma Informed Care programs in the nation.
Based on the Adverse Childhood Experience Study it was determined that there are ten types of childhood trauma which most affect a person’s social, emotional and, as it turns out, physical well being. Five of those are personal – physical abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, physical neglect, and emotional neglect. Five others are related to other family members: a parent who is an alcoholic, a mother who is a victim of domestic violence, a family member in jail, a family member diagnosed with a mental illness, the disappearance of a parent through divorce, or parental death, adoption or abandonment.
The counselors at Jubilee Leadership Academy specialize in a myriad of needs including mental health, addiction to chemicals, addiction to technology, anger management and teens affected by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Students at our program also have the opportunity to benefit from Intensive Outpatient in a group setting, trauma group, and ACE’s training. Under the leadership of Mr. Todd Wagner, LICSW, CDP, our clinical counseling program utilizes professional staff with over 80 years of combined experience.
We at Jubilee are dedicated to helping our students work through childhood trauma that may today be causing them to act out, be unmotivated or angry or depressed, or to misbehave. We especially make certain that we do no further damage to already fragile emotional states. Therefore, punishments for missteps are avoided at all costs and focus is placed on positive ways for the boy to achieve self-regulation.
Each new student at JLA attends Focus training. It is geared toward helping them understand and verbalize what makes them feel, and sometimes act out, as they do. This self-knowledge and understanding allows us to help them leave the past behind and focus on a future that is clear from old adversities.
Jubilee offers excellent counseling for all of its students. Some of the counseling that we offer includes:
Individual Counseling: Individual teen counseling is a regularly scheduled formalized counseling session held with students and one of the Jubilee counselors. Individual counseling focuses on improving the overall level of adaptive functioning in the areas of behavior, emotional expression, and interpersonal relationships. In addition, individual counseling takes on significant value in the resolution of issues and concerns that the student feels ill-prepared to take to the group session.
Family Counseling: Family counseling usually occurs over the phone, but parents are welcome to attend in person. A Jubilee counselor schedules family counseling sessions for each student. These sessions provide the opportunity for families to work through sensitive issues together and to support each other, prevent relapse, and plan for returning home.
Group Counseling: Traditional group counseling is facilitated by a Jubilee counselor several times a week. Twice a week, each of our students participates in a general group, which consists of several members of the students peer group. Additionally, each student is assigned to two other counseling skill-building groups that specifically address relevant issues.
Experiential Based Counseling: Certified ropes course facilitators and recreational professionals operate Jubilee’s experiential based counseling sessions. Experiential based counseling uses activity-based experiences to teach life skills in areas such as relationships, communication, teamwork, self-esteem, self-awareness, accountability, and responsibility. Involving students in challenging and unpredictable tasks helps them think in new and creative ways about old problems. These activities are designed to identify what needs to be changed in a student’s life and relationships, and helps students to take the steps necessary to achieve success.
